The Shambles, York
York Minster
The Battle of Fulford is often treated as a minor battle of no great significance but when Harold Hardrada’s Vikings fought the Saxon army of Mercia and Northumbria at Fulford, outside York, on 20th September 1066, it set in motion a series of events that would result in the eventual defeat and death of Harold Godwinson, the last Saxon king, at Senlac Hill less than a month later.
Jorvik (York) was once the centre of Scandinavian power in Britain, and the Viking influence can still be seen today. This is the 2012 Viking Fire Festival in Fulford, at the end of Jorvik Viking Festival week, featuring a mock battle between Saxons and Vikings, archers setting fire to a longship, and some very, very cold wind
