In the wake of NBA player Jason Collins coming out today, F1 journalist/pit reporter Will Buxton has written this piece chronicling the stories of other LGBT racers such as 1970s journeyman driver Mike Beuttler and transgender pre-war racer Roberta Cowell, and questions the “macho” image of motorsports that is still prevalent today, and the prejudices not just against women, but against all drivers of a different sexuality/gender identity as well.
The article does fail to mention the only openly gay racing driver (to my knowledge) currently competing in an international racing series - Mike Verschuur of the Netherlands, who is one of the top drivers in both the Renault Clio Cup and Renault Megané Trophy.
Buxton did respond to my tweet about Mr. Verschuur in response to the article, however: https://twitter.com/willbuxton/status/328956486942343169
A rather interesting read
